Fit Moms for Life Book Review & Giveaway!

Posted by scarlett1973 on March 16, 2013 at 4:25 PM Comments comments (19)

Book Description

Fit Moms For Life acknowledges the challenges and struggles moms face to make time for themselves while providing a road map to help them get in shape. Each chapter includes different success stories and advice from other moms who share their wisdom and tips to inspire others.

About the Author

Dustin Maher is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Kinesiology with a minor in business. Dustin has helped thousands of women get into shape and owns one of the largest boot camp programs in the country.

What people have to say…

“This book was inspiring--reading about real women with issues similar to my own was so motivating. Dustin's common sense approach comes through in his book--this has the potential to help so many people!” – Amazon Member (Amazon, 2011).

My perspective…

Like most moms, I rarely have time for myself. If I’m not working, I’m taking care of my son, preparing food, cleaning the house or running errands. Therefore, finding time to workout was practically impossible, or so I thought.

On the Frequently Asked Questions section of the book, Dusting discusses the importance of making our health and fitness a priority. He also explains how we can make time to get it shape and I was VERY surprised by how simple it was to do so.

As he recommended, I took on his challenge and I tracked my time for a week. Sure enough, I discovered that I spent more than 30 minutes each day on activities that are not very productive like watching TV and surfing the web.

I cut down the time I spend on the computer and instead of laying down while I watch TV, I get my workouts done during that time. I didn’t have to disrupt my work schedule and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. In fact, the time went by so fast that I started to increase my workout time without even realizing it. Before I knew it, 15 minutes turned into 30, I went up to 45 minutes by the third week and I’m aiming for an hour of exercise by the end of this month.

I follow Dr. Fuhrman’s Nutritarian diet and I don’t have any issues with my eating habits or my weight. Therefore, I didn’t go into the eating plan Dustin talks about, but I really liked something I read on the Food as Fuel chapter. He recommends to eat foods that aren’t overly processed and to avoid ingredients you can’t pronounce. As he explains, “most of those ingredients are chemicals or preservatives put in the food to increase shelf life. They’re not food. You want to focus on whole foods and products that are made from whole foods” (Dustin Maher, 2012). I completely agree with this perspective and I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading this book as much as I did.

Dustin’s recommendations and techniques are easy to follow and realistic. I definitely recommend his book and I can say from personal experience that Fit Moms For Life is different that all the books I’ve read on the subject.

You can buy the book for $17.99 from

Get Your Kids to Eat More Fruits & Veggies

Posted by scarlett1973 on January 31, 2013 at 5:05 PM Comments comments (2)

Most parents know how frustrating it can be to get your kids to eat well. If your child is a picky eater, you need to be creative to avoid the drama. Forcing your kids to eat makes everyone upset and trying to sneak fruits and vegetables into their food is not the answer. If you want your kids to be more open to try new foods you need to make mealtime fun and turn it into a game to deviate the attention from the food itself.

If you look at all the products made for kids, they have bright colors and attractive images that call their attention. Many brands also use popular cartoon characters so when your child looks at the packaging they are drawn to it. Companies use these marketing practices to sell their products because they know it works. That is how I came up with the idea of decorating my son’s plates and I continue to do it every day because it does the trick. Here are some tips to help you get started.

If your children become involved in choosing and making their meals, they'll be more likely to eat what they've created. Let them pick their own fruits and vegetables and ask them to help you during preparation.

Decorate their plates and make their dishes look fun by combining bright colors. As you see here, you can use fruits or vegetables.

Use themes you know your kids would like. For Example, if you have a girl decorate a dish with flowers and if you have a boy you can make a truck.

Many parents tell me that they don’t have the time to do this, but it doesn’t take as long as you may think.

Depending on which fruits and vegetables you are using, you can cut them the night before and have everything ready for the next day to save time.

Use cookie cutters to make different shapes, a straw to poke holes and a toothpick to carve images.

You don’t have to be an artist and if you need some Fun Meal ideas you can visit my Facebook page to get inspired. It’s definitely worth the try because your efforts will payoff at the end. You just need to add a little patience and lots of love!!!
